Preventing labor camps in the future-In the future, it would be difficult for a Gulag like system to form because a system on that large of a scale would not go unnoticed today. If a forced labor system was to be implemented today, the United Nations (U.N.) would quickly be on top of it. There have been many laws passed by the United Nations to prevent labor camps like the Gulags. The fundamental human rights and the Geneva convention were created to be a guideline and rule book for all countries to follow. The Gulags are an infringement of these rights in multiple categories, including all thirty of the fundamental human rights and the Geneva convention, which protects the rights of prisoners of war. Having laws in place to prevent the Gulags is one task, but actually preventing them is another. With today's satellite imaging and the internet keeping a large scale labor system unnoticed would be extremely difficult, if not impossible. If a labor system was created, many measures would be taken to shut down the camp. If a forced labor camp was created the first thing the U.N. would do is place economic sanctions on the country and stop all trade with them. If the sanctions did not stop them, then peace troops would be sent in and other countries would also send troops into the camp to liberate those inside.
Conclusion- To conclude, the Gulag camps were atrocious and ruined the lives of countless people to give Russia enough strength to become one of the two world powers after World War Two. These camps did their part for the country of Russia, but at the cost of many of its inhabitants. Now, many years after their closure, more information is still being discovered about these camps, and the world can use the Gulag camps as a learning experience to make sure a similar tragedy never occurs again. |
